Guide: Taper vs Dowel vs Spring Pins-Which Pin Should You Use?
Compare taper pins, dowel pins and spring pins, and learn how to choose the right pin type for alignment, locking, vibration and assembly needs.

Pins are small parts, but they often decide whether an assembly is easy to locate, strong enough, or stable during use.
Taper pins, dowel pins and spring pins are all common in machinery, fixtures, shafts, hinges and industrial assemblies. They may look similar at first, but their functions are different. Choosing the wrong pin can lead to poor alignment, loose fitting, difficult assembly or failure under vibration.
The right choice depends on the purpose of the pin: accurate location, locking, shock absorption, easy removal or cost control.
Spring Pins
Spring pins, also called roll pins or tension pins, are hollow cylindrical pins with a slot along the length. They are slightly larger than the hole. When installed, the pin compresses and creates spring force against the hole wall.
This makes spring pins useful where some flexibility is needed. They can absorb vibration and small tolerance differences better than solid pins.
Spring pins are commonly used for gears, pulleys, handles, levers, shafts and general mechanical assemblies. They are also useful when the hole tolerance is not as strict as a precision dowel pin application.
However, spring pins are not the best choice for very precise positioning. They can also damage very soft materials if the spring force is too high.
Use spring pins when vibration resistance, easy installation and tolerance flexibility are important.
Dowel Pins
Dowel pins are solid cylindrical pins with precise diameter control. Their main purpose is accurate location and alignment.
They are often used to position two parts before tightening with screws or bolts. In fixtures, molds, machinery and precision assemblies, dowel pins help keep parts in the same position during repeated assembly.
Dowel pins can be used with press fit or slip fit, depending on the design. A press fit holds the pin tightly in one part. A slip fit allows easier assembly and removal.
The hole quality is very important for dowel pins. If the hole is not accurate, the pin may be too loose, too tight, or difficult to install.
Use dowel pins when accurate alignment and repeatable positioning are required.
Taper Pins
Taper pins are solid pins with a gradual taper along the length. They are installed into a matching tapered hole and lock by wedge action.
They are often used where a tight and secure location is needed, but occasional removal may still be required. Some taper pins are used with nuts or threaded ends to make removal easier.
Taper pins are commonly used in hubs, collars, shafts, machine parts and mechanical linkages. They can provide a strong and accurate fit when the tapered hole is prepared correctly.
The main point is that taper pins require proper matching holes. They are not as simple as pressing a straight pin into a cylindrical hole. If the taper does not match well, the holding result may not be stable.
Use taper pins when a secure wedging fit and accurate location are needed.
Simple Selection Logic
If the assembly needs flexibility, vibration resistance and easier installation, spring pins are often a practical choice.
If the assembly needs accurate location and repeatable positioning, dowel pins are usually better.
If the assembly needs a tight wedge fit with possible removal later, taper pins can be considered.
The pin should be selected according to the real function, not only by size or appearance. A pin used for locating parts is not the same as a pin used for absorbing vibration or locking a shaft.
What Buyers Should Confirm
Before requesting a quote, buyers should confirm the pin type, diameter, length, material, hardness, surface finish and quantity.
It is also useful to provide the hole size, fit requirement, mating material, assembly method and whether the pin needs to be removed later.
For precision dowel pins or taper pins, drawings are strongly recommended. For spring pins, the hole size and application condition are also important.
Hextro supports spring pins, dowel pins, taper pins and other custom pin products according to drawings, samples and application requirements.
